의사 출신의 25년차 저널리스트이자 작가로, 연세대학교 의과대학을 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 의료법윤리학 전공으로 박사 학위를 받았다. 세브란스병원에서 수련의 과정을 마친 후 3년 동안 공중보건의사로 일했다. 1999년부터 2011년까지 신문 ‘청년의사’ 편집국장으로, 그 이후에는 편집주간으로 일하고 있다. 연세의대 의학교육학과 객원교수로, 인문사회의학 관련 내용을 강의한다. 한국의료윤리학회 상임이사, 인권의학연구소 이사를 맡고 있다. 한국의료의 과거와 현재와 미래를 조망하는 책 『개념의료』, 에세이 『여행준비의 기술』 『나의 영어 해방 일지』, 평론집 『한국의료, 모든 변화는 진보다』, 장편소설 『종합병원2.0』 등 8권의 저서와 『청진기가 사라진다』(공역), 『환자의 경험이 혁신이다』(공역), 『차가운 의학, 따뜻한 의사』 등 8권의 역서를 펴냈다. 조선일보, 중앙일보 등 여러 매체의 고정 칼럼니스트로 활동했다. 유튜브 〈나는의사다〉 〈의대도서관〉, 책 팟캐스트 〈YG와 JYP의 책걸상〉의 PD 겸 진행자다. 한국 의료 현안, 헬스케어의 미래, 병원 경영, 글쓰기/커니케이션, 여행, 의료 인문학 등의 주제로, 병원, 기업, 학회/협회, 학교 등에서 다수의 강연을 했다. 여행준비와 요리가 취미다.
