리처드 워커스탠퍼드 대학을 졸업하고 존스 홉킨스 대학에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 현재 캘리포니아 대학 버클리 캠퍼스 지리학과 교수로 재직하고 있으며, 주요 연구 분야는 도시 지리학, 경제 지리학 및 환경 문제이며, 미국 캘리포니아와 유럽 지역에 관심이 많다. 저서로 The New Social Economy: Reworking the Division of Labor(공저, 1992), The Conquest of Bread: 150 Years of Agribusiness in California(2004), The Country in the City: The Greening of the San Francisco Bay Area(2008) 등이 있다.
